For many years the Foundation ran a program called "Oyster Kids" for local elementary school students. With the opening of the Annapolis Maritime Museum this program became redundant and the Foundation explored new ways to introduce youngsters to the magic of Chesapeake Bay.
STEM through Sailing & Boating -- 5th Grade is the Foundation's newest program for elementary students. It is designed to help 5th graders understand the connection between their classroom learning, their local environment, future career options and their civic responsibilities as stewards of Chesapeake Bay. The program was piloted in May-June of 2014 in Anne Arundel County and with expanded financial support will grow to include 5th graders on both sides of the Bay and beyond.
The STEM program provides many opportunities for community support. Volunteers are needed for both the In-School and On-the-Water days for each school. Sailboats and powerboats are needed to take youngsters and their volunteer instructor/facilitator out on the bay for both the joy of the experience and to complete a research assignment. Community partners are needed to provide the program materials and provide sponsorship. Donations of all sizes to the Education Fund Drive help support the refinement and growth of this unique educational opportunity.
VOLUNTEER are needed for the 2018 STEM Program - May 29th, 30th and 31st. Students will be coming from Eastport Elementary, Georgeown East and Annapolis Middle Schools. Volunteers are needed as instructors, to serve lunch and assist the kids at the dock. We also need 6-8 boats each day (with Captains and a mate) for the on-the-water activites.
Do you want to be a STEM Instructor, help with the land modules or other onshore activities? We need volunteers for these activites as well. SIGN UP NOW!
"Eastport's fifth grade students were thrilled to experience your wonderful "On the Water" STEM program. The knowledge and insight they gained in their research during this trip will remain with them and hopefully instill a lifelong interest in the Chesapeake Bay and its abundant resources. From our students and staff we thank you and wish you a wonderful summer on the Chesapeake." (Lynne Evans, Principal, Eastport Elementary School)
STEM Program Partners: Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) and the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE).
STEM Program: This program is designed for use by other Chesapeake Bay yacht clubs, Maritime Museums or other educational programs around the Bay in partnership with their local elementary schools. EYCF will provide the module materials, curriculum, teacher training and volunteers to oversee the program’s planning & implementation. STEM program hosts will provide facilities, boats, the partnership with their local elementary schools and additional host-designated costs like food and water for the students.
On June 3 & 4, 2014 fifth grade students from Georgetown Elementary & Eastport Elementary Schools covered the grounds of EYC to experience hands-on learning of Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM) skills through sailing and boating. Five hands-on learning modules included: Mechanical Advantage, Wind and Stormy Weather, Tides and Navigation, Storm Water Runoff and Bay Water Quality, Native and Invasive Species. The kids spent a half a day on land and a half day out on the Bay. This pilot program exemplifies the Foundation’s mission to promote participation in boating, education in the marine industry and environmental stewardship of the Chesapeake Bay.
